Frequently asked questions
- Is YAML to JSON free to use?
- Yes. YAML to JSON is available on the free plan with 20 daily runs. Paid plans add higher quotas for repeat work.
- Why did my YAML comments disappear?
- JSON has no comment syntax, so there is nowhere for them to go. Keep the YAML as the source of truth and treat the JSON as generated output rather than something to edit by hand.
- What happens to anchors and merge keys?
- Anchors, aliases and merge keys are resolved into their final values during conversion, so the JSON comes out fully expanded. That is usually what you want, but the step cannot be reversed because the sharing information is gone.
- How are multi-line strings converted?
- Block scalars become ordinary JSON strings with escaped newlines. Note that literal style preserves line breaks while folded style collapses them into spaces, and that choice is already baked in by the time you see the JSON.
- Why did my date turn into a string?
- YAML parses unquoted ISO dates as timestamp values, and JSON has no timestamp type, so they are written back as strings. Quote the value in the YAML source if you need certainty that it stays text.
