HTML Unescape Online
Convert common HTML entities back to readable characters.
What this Developer tool does
Convert common HTML entities back to readable characters. It helps developers format, validate, encode, decode, inspect, generate, or debug small pieces of technical data.
HTML Unescape helps with developer work directly in the browser. Use it for fast formatting, encoding, decoding, hashing, validation, and debugging tasks.
How to use HTML Unescape
- Open the live tool at /tools/html-unescape.
- Paste the relevant code, token, JSON, CSV, URL, color, cron expression, regex pattern, or technical text into the input field.
- Run HTML Unescape and check the generated result before using it in production work.
Best use cases for HTML Unescape
- Debug API responses, configuration snippets, tokens, and structured data.
- Prepare clean output for documentation, tickets, tests, or code review.
- Avoid opening heavy desktop tools for quick developer checks.
Examples and checks for HTML Unescape
Example inputs
- A page excerpt stored with entities encoded
- A database field that shows & instead of &
- A feed or API response with escaped markup
Common mistakes to avoid
- Unescaping twice and turning inert text into live markup
- Expecting tags to be removed rather than revealed
- Assuming every entity name is supported
Output checklist
- Check that angle brackets appear as text, not as elements
- Confirm accented characters and symbols came back correctly
- Render the result as plain text, not as HTML
Use test data where possible and avoid live credentials, private keys, passwords, or production tokens.

HTML Unescape output
The result is formatted, validated, decoded, encoded, generated, or explained output ready to copy into a development workflow.
Review before publishing
Do not paste production secrets, private keys, or sensitive credentials into any online utility unless you understand the risk.

Frequently asked questions
- Is HTML Unescape free to use?
- Yes. HTML Unescape is available on the free plan with 20 daily runs. Paid plans add higher quotas for repeat work.
- Why are some entities left untouched?
- Only valid references are converted, so a misspelling such as &nsp; or an unsupported name stays as literal text. Numeric references like © are normally recognised as well.
- Does this remove HTML tags?
- No. It only turns entities back into characters, so <p> becomes the visible text <p> rather than a paragraph element. If you want the markup gone, strip the tags separately.
- Why did &lt; become <?
- That is correct for doubly-escaped content: one layer comes off and the inner reference remains. Decode a second time only if you know the source was encoded twice, otherwise you will mangle legitimate text.
- Is it safe to render the decoded text as HTML?
- No. Unescaping produces live < and > characters, so previously inert text can become markup or script once rendered. Show the decoded value as plain text unless you control and trust the source.
