Frequently asked questions
- Is JSON to YAML free to use?
- Yes. JSON to YAML is available on the free plan with 20 daily runs. Paid plans add higher quotas for repeat work.
- Why does the YAML come out with two-space indentation?
- YAML expresses structure with indentation instead of braces, so the converter has to choose a convention. Two spaces is the norm, and mixing tabs with spaces anywhere in the file is a parse error, which is the usual reason a hand-edited config fails.
- Are any JSON values ambiguous once they are YAML?
- Strings that look like other types are the risk. Values such as yes, no, on and off have been read as booleans by YAML 1.1 parsers, so a converted config can change meaning in older tooling even though the file looks identical.
- Can YAML represent everything JSON can?
- For data, yes — JSON is effectively a subset of YAML, so the value translation is lossless both ways. What does not survive are YAML-only features: comments, anchors and merge keys have no JSON equivalent.
- Should I use YAML everywhere then?
- No. Indentation sensitivity makes large YAML files easy to break, and implicit type coercion produces bugs that JSON's stricter syntax cannot. JSON is the safer default for machine-generated files, with YAML for hand-edited configuration.
