Examples and checks for Image OCR
Example inputs
- A screenshot of a receipt or invoice
- A photo of a printed page
- A slide or diagram that contains text
Common mistakes to avoid
- Publishing the extracted text without checking numbers and names
- Photographing a page at an angle so the lines curve out of alignment
- Running OCR on an image where small text is only a few pixels tall
Output checklist
- Compare totals, dates and reference numbers against the image
- Check line breaks where the text wrapped
- Verify symbols, accents and special characters came through
OCR usually runs on documents that were private for a reason, so avoid uploading identity documents, payslips, medical letters or anything holding passwords unless you are comfortable sending them to an online service.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Image OCR free to use?
- Yes. Image OCR is available on the free plan with 20 daily runs. Paid plans add higher quotas for repeat work.
- Why did OCR get numbers or names wrong?
- Recognition is a best guess per character, and 0 against O, 1 against l, 5 against S are the usual confusions. Proofread figures, names and codes rather than trusting the text.
- What makes OCR accuracy worse?
- Low resolution, skew, shadows and text over a busy background. A straight, evenly lit, tightly cropped photo is recognised far better than a page photographed at an angle.
- Does it keep the original layout?
- Partly. Line breaks and paragraph order usually survive, but columns, tables and side-by-side text often come out interleaved or in the wrong reading order.
- Can OCR read handwriting?
- Printed text is what it is built for. Handwriting recognition is far less reliable and depends heavily on how neat the writing is.
