Frequently asked questions
- Is CSS Minifier free to use?
- Yes. CSS Minifier is available on the free plan with 20 daily runs. Paid plans add higher quotas for repeat work.
- Is minifying CSS the same as compressing it?
- No. Minifying rewrites the text by stripping comments and collapsing whitespace, while gzip or brotli compress the bytes for transfer. The two stack, so serve the minified file with compression enabled as well.
- Does minification change how the CSS behaves?
- Not when the input is valid — whitespace is insignificant in CSS outside strings and a few edge cases, so the rules should be identical. Keep the readable source in version control and minify as a build step.
- Does it remove unused rules?
- No. It only strips comments and unnecessary whitespace, so selectors nothing references stay in the output. Removing dead rules needs a tool that compares your CSS against the markup that actually uses it.
- Can minifying break my stylesheet?
- It can if the source was already invalid, or if whitespace is collapsed inside calc(), where the spaces around a minus sign are required. Test the minified file in a browser before deploying and keep the original.
