Add Page Numbers to a Contract PDF
A contract without page numbers can be reassembled without anyone noticing. Numbering is a small step that makes a document look professional and, more importantly, makes tampering obvious.
Where the numbers go
One consistent position, usually bottom centre or bottom right, in a format such as Page 3 of 12 so that a missing page stands out. Start at one on the first page unless the document has a cover sheet that should not be counted.
Number it last
Every edit that adds or removes a page changes all the numbers after it, so stamp the numbering as the final step before sending. If the contract will be printed double-sided, check that the numbers do not fall into the binding margin.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I number only part of the document?
- Yes. Choose the page range to stamp, which is useful when appendices or exhibits are numbered separately.
- Can the numbering start from a number other than one?
- Yes. Set the starting number when the contract continues a sequence from an earlier document.
- Does stamping change my original file?
- No. A new PDF is produced and the uploaded source stays exactly as it was.
