Combine Scanned Documents into One PDF
Scanners often produce one file per page, or one file per section, and sending a folder of loose scans looks careless. Merging them into a single PDF in the correct order takes a minute and makes the submission look deliberate.
Fix each scan before you merge
Rotate anything that arrived sideways, crop the black edges, and run OCR now if you want the final document to be searchable. Corrections are much easier on individual files than on a hundred-page combined document.
Keep the page size consistent
Merging A4 and Letter scans gives you a document with mixed page sizes. That is acceptable on screen, but for printing it is worth rescanning the odd pages so every page matches.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I merge password-protected PDFs?
- Yes, when you supply the password for each file, because the pages have to be read to be combined.
- Does merging reduce the quality of the scans?
- No. Pages are copied into the combined document as they are, so the file size is roughly the sum of the parts.
- What order do the files end up in?
- The order you add them. Rename the scans with numbers or dates first if the correct sequence is not obvious.
