  • Converting by volume an ingredient that is measured by weight

Output checklist

  • Check which gallon or cup the source document uses
  • Match the converted unit to your actual measuring equipment
  • Convert the whole batch and divide rather than converting per serving

Frequently asked questions

Is Volume Converter free to use?
Yes. Volume Converter is available on the free plan with 20 daily runs. Paid plans add higher quotas for repeat work.
Is a US gallon the same as a UK gallon?
No. A US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial gallon is 4.546 litres, roughly 20% larger; the imperial gallon is no longer used for trade in the UK, but the difference still catches people converting older documents or American recipes.
Is a cup the same size everywhere?
No. A US customary cup is 236.6 millilitres, a metric cup is 250 millilitres, and an Australian cup is 250 millilitres with a larger tablespoon; that is close to a 6% difference, enough to change how a bake turns out.
Why can a fluid ounce and an ounce of weight be different?
A fluid ounce measures volume and an ounce measures mass, and the two only coincide for water near its densest. An ounce of flour and a fluid ounce of flour are different amounts, so a recipe mixing the two needs a density to convert.
Can I convert a recipe from cups to grams?
Not from volume alone, because it depends on the ingredient: a cup of flour is about 120 grams while a cup of sugar is about 200. Use a per-ingredient conversion table rather than one universal factor, since the error is large enough to ruin baking.
